[Yu Hwang Wu's Language Essay] Study Strategy & Tips for Success in ‘2011 College Entrance Exam’

Even before the lingering storm of college entrance exam for 2010 academic year is gone, the 2011 academic year college scholastic ability test already entered its count-down. To-be high school 3rd graders testees and repeaters are facing a period left with not even ‘D-300′ that they should jump-start preparation in earnest for college scholastic ability test.

In particular, as the 2011 academic year college entrance exam is the last college entrance test which will present questions from the same contents and scope as earlier college scholastic ability tests, competitions are expected fierce and tensions are rising among the testees. On top of that, candidates screening methods of colleges grew much more diverse, and ‘the 2011 college entrance exam’ is demanding even more tightly established test strategy than ever before.

In order to shatter the ‘weights’ by the ‘vagueness’ on what and how to start and college entrance policy etc different from last year, we set out for the support of to-be-testees with the ‘Study Strategy & Tips for Success in ‘2011 College Entrance Exam’ with the help of the president of ‘Yu Hwang Wu Language Essay’.

▲Firmly establish the goal such as college and major that suit your career vision and aptitude!

That is by all means the first thing you are to do before jump-starting college scholastic ability test mode. When your goals are not firmly set up, your preparation is very liable to fall prostrate not finding any clue after all. Hence, you are advised to find out the aptitude and career path of your own, check your own conditions, set up goal by deciding on five to six colleges and majors that you want to enter, and then prepare for the college entrance exam.

Once your goal is thus established, you are on your way to find the screening requirements that suit your conditions and set up the exam strategy for entrance to your desired college and major. Of course, on such basis, sufficiently feasible specific study plan will also need be set up as well.

▲Devise study strategy by the periods for the college scholastic ability test that is not even 300 days ahead!

The study strategy required for the testees by the major periods is the method of using the time until the real test most effectively. Without setting up strategy period-specifically like winter vacation, 1st semester, simulated test, summer vacation and 2nd semester etc, you cannot but fall into a pitfall of feeling monotonous throughout the test preparing period or doing only skin-deep study on the lessons that you have accomplished so far.

From March when the 1st semester starts, it is best to proceed with preparation for occasional application openings strategically with focus on regular application opportunities. To look at application with mid upper level, preparation for 3rd grade 1st semester intramural transcript also should endeavored. During summer vacation that offers long study period with the highest study efficiency among test preparation periods, you might seriously determine whether to apply for occasional openings, and set up and prepare for the goal by it. This period is also the days when you finally decide on the elective courses of college scholastic ability test. In September which is the period to jump-start full scale preparation for college scholastic ability test, you really need simulated test based study. It means you are demanded to be accustomed to the study of college scholastic ability test type. You just need to arrange the question trends and types by solving previously presented questions of college scholastic ability test by the areas, and checking incorrect answers is a simply must.

▲Set up plan for occasional application openings in tune with the extended opportunities of occasional screening!

The quota for 2011 academic year occasional application opening is estimated 230,000 or so which is an increase of 10,000 or so over last year. It means occasional openings comprise the majority, which represents over 60% of the entire application quota. Hence, to testees, setting up plan for occasional openings is not a consideration done ‘if necessary’ but is a ‘must’.

In particular, the criteria of occasional special openings that screened only with transcripts and assay previously are anticipated to diversify to more options like local balanced development, local leading talents, special talent holder, excellent potential ability holder, and principal recommendation etc, so testees can approach one step further toward success in college entrance only if they check the major contents of each opening and prepare for openings that are just right for themselves.

In addition, let’s not forget to check that colleges are increasingly conducting aptitude tests in occasional application openings. As aptitude test presents questions in objective style unlike assay test, aptitude test can be applied with relatively less burden for testees of intermediate level or lower intermediate level.

▲Read out the Admission Officer System, and if it is not for advantage, just forget it.

The colleges that execute admission officer system in occasional application opening include 110 or so colleges like Seoul Nat’l University and Korea University etc, and recruiting quota, 35,000, doubled that of last year. It means one out of six students admitted in occasional application screening this year enter college through admission officer system. Looking into the screening contents of such admission officer system closely is also a way to success in college entrance.

However, do not swept away in the mood of admission officer system extension. In particular, once you find it disadvantageous to you after grasping the admission officer system screening, do not struggle to manage to make up required documents but it would be wise to forget it. In other words, efficient for success in college entrance is to solidify your inside by taking care of intramural transcript and college scholastic ability test etc instead of preparing to meet the conditions admission officer system requirements.

▲Maintain regular lifestyle and do not lose confidence!

Not even 300 days are left until college scholastic ability test. Short period as the days may be for testees that are left tense in pursuit of the goal, success in college entrance, 10 months in practice is never a short period. As they are demanded, students should maintain steady lifestyle of studying intensively and take rest bits by bits. For the conditions of body and mind that may go astray at any moment, let’s not forget that regular pattern of life and health management are just essential. Keeping up confidence is also a must. It is often the case that you may lose heart when you see poorer score than you expected after you had pressed on your study so hard. Just shake off a moment of anxiety and pick up your confident to push forward what you have planned, and that is going to become the foundation of determining the success in the 2011 college entrance.

‘D-170 to College Entrance Exam,’ Strategic Points for Language Subject – Yu Hwang Wu

June 3, 2009 by atapi

socialactions - Yu Hwang Wu

The 2010 College Entrance Exam is being held on November 12. About 170 days are left until the due date. The first mock examination scheduled for June 4 is approaching near. Students must now begin to look at problems from last year, grasp a sense of difficulty level and practice under testing atmosphere.

Preparation period is about to end, and the results can vary tremendously depending on how well students utilize this period. An efficient learning strategy formed based on individual strengths and weaknesses is necessary for students greeting ‘D-170 to College Entrance Exam’.

If so, what learning strategy should students plan to receive a high score for the language subject?  The head of Korean Language Class at a famous linguistic and essay academy in Mokdong, Yu Hwang Wu, has a suggestion.

Since Language Subject of 2010 CEE is expected to have problems with similar difficulties as understanding, analysis and reasoning problems of last year instead of asking for simple memorization or facts, it would be wiser to concentrate on reasoning and creative thinking than to practice understanding.

First, students must not forget that learning of language begins from accurate understanding and summarization of basic concepts and terms. If there is lack of understanding for concepts and terms, it becomes impossible to accurately understand given texts. It takes more time and increases the probability of finding a wrong answer.

Review the trend of problems and problems given in the past. Every year, mock examinations in June and September were based on the difficulty of problems for the actual examination of that year. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider the types of problems and lectures on television for the June mock examination coming up in two weeks. Students should understand the level of difficulty of last year’s problems and prepare appropriately.

Works included in textbooks must be studied. It also helps to summarize the types of problems given in mock examinations and contents often discussed in EBS lectures. Literary works with important meaning in the history of literature that had not come out as problems yet must also be checked.

Accurate reading in a short period of time is important for non-literary texts. Begin to practice solving problems while checking the time. Students should be trained to understand development of the content, knowledge or lessons taught by the text, and intentions of the writer.

They must also be well prepared for current events. Looking at recent trend of CEE, the weight of current event problems is continuously increasing. Language Subject is not an exception to that trend. Take interest in social problems and issues discussed by newspapers and broadcasts. Prepare for each topic by summarizing individual thoughts on the matter in advance.

Management of health and condition is the primary preparation for CEE. If health and condition cannot be maintained until the testing day, studies so far may come to nothing. Students are not recommended to suddenly reduce the time of sleep for the purpose of increasing their learning time. Limit the amount of meal to about 80% of normal meals so that the stomach does not feel burdensome and the brain can function promptly without feeling of fullness. In particular, special care must be taken until the testing day to prevent physical rhythm from breaking down by anxiety and stress.

How should students prepare for language area in college entrance examination? – Yu Hwang Wu Korean language classroom

April 3, 2009 by atapi

Yu Hwang Wu

How should students prepare for language area in college entrance examination?

Recently strange works and particular sentences are taken from language area in college entrance examination. Thus, a lot of examinees have a lot of difficulties in language area.
In the event of literature in the trial examination by Office of Education in March this year, most of students saw the works of Hyung Do Gi or Sin Ui Lee for the first time, excepting ‘In Port Close to Uragio’ of Yong Ak Lee. As above, a lot of strange works were taken or difficulty of sentences is raised when familiar works were taken. Most of students are unfamiliar with writing, vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, examinees are easy to fail to pass college entrance examination by language area if they don’t prepare thoroughly for language area.

If so, how should examinees prepare for language area to get good scores and how can they enter a university they want?

To capture language scope, consequently examinees should have a habit of extensive reading and intensive reading and improve ability to settle questions steadily by raising creative thought.

Extensive reading and intensive reading are a foundation to learn language and discourse. As we can see in the trial examination by Office of Education in March, if accurate reading about the text is not based, it took a lot of times to settle questions and had high probability connected with incorrect answers.

To improve reading ability, it is necessary to make enough practice of extensive reading, intensive reading and logical deduction. For extensive reading, examinees should extend background knowledge through various kinds of reading data as society, science, history and arts besides data related to modern poetry, modern novels, old novels, old poetry, dramatic literature and scenario. It is also necessary to make the process of reading training to grasp and understand key information of the text accurately through intensive reading. In addition, examinees should practice a series process of deduction analyzing, synthesizing, applying and deducing.

Especially, examinees should train ways of reading by each genre and arrange basic matters for approximate reading of strange works so that examinees may not at a loss afterwards.

Creative thought is also a key point to get high scores in language area. It is possible through extensive thinking and extensive writing. Namely, examinees should know how to express their own opinions and feelings through utility and reconstruction of data with high expressive ability. In a word, high-grade thinking abilities as deductive, critical and creative thought are more important than realistic thinking ability. Examinees can prepare for language area and discourse test and descriptive evaluation for high school records through creative writing as above.

Finally, it is a shortcut to high scores in language area to improve ability to settle questions. To achieve the purpose, it is necessary to make strategies to see into each type of questions in language area of college entrance examination. No one denies that all the questions have a pattern. In the final round of WBC Baseball, Chang Yong Im, a pitcher of Korean team, hit the goal from Ichiro since his pitching pattern was disclosed. In language area, if you check patterns of examination taken until now carefully and practice intensively with selected exercise books including questions in which you were weak, it will give you a lot of helps.

A representative of Yu Hwang Wu Korean Language Classroom said ‘The importance of language and discourse, putting together ‘College entrance examination, high school records and discourse’ comprehensively, will be more distinguished in college entrance examination in the future’ and advised ‘To prepare for the tendency, examinees should carry out writing practice based on extensive reading, intensive reading, logical deduction and creative thought for a long time, not a short time’.

A Study of Gahsa (Korean Verse)

- the period 14~16th century -

by Lee Sang-Bo

In this dissertation an attempt is made by auther to give a clear explanation as to the origin, conception, contents and forms of ‘Gahsa’, a form of Korean verse, particularly that of hhe period between 14~16th century concerning their writers and developments. The author has expounded the fact that the songs were originated in the second half of the 14th century and that the high Priest Raong’s ‘Song of Amitabha’ was widely propagated through the teaching of Budhist hymns. The basic form of the songs consists of tetrameter (cadence of four syllables) and there is practically no limit for the length of lines. Just as in the case of ‘Lofu’(collection of songs) and couplets of China, the Songs of the Fore Period are recorded with the musical notation to be sung. Judging from their contents, subjects and their religious nature, they can be broadly classified into the following categories: (1) ‘Songs of Hermitage’ (2) ‘Songs of Banishments’ (3) ‘Songs of Wanderings (4) ‘Songs of Wars’ (5) ‘Songs of Morality’ (6) ‘Songs of Eulogy’ (7) ‘Songs of Love’ (8) ‘Songs of Evangelism’

Consequently the whole songs may be classified as follows:

(1) Songs of Hermitage: Song of Spring, Song of Viewing Scenary Pavilion, Song of Thoegye (Retreat to Dales), Song of Sheongshan, and Song of West Lake.

(2) Songs of Banishment: Song of Million Indignations, The Song of the Single-Hearted and a Supplimentary to the Song of the Single-hearted.

(3) Songs of Wanderings: Song of Gwansheo, Song of Gwandong and Song of Baegshang Pavilion.

(4) Songs of Wars: Song of Conquest of the South.

(5) Songs of Moralitys: Song of Harp Music, Song of Husking, Song of Morality and Song of Self Alarm and Song of Good Advices.

(6) Songs of Eulogy: Laudation of the Beauty.

(7) Songs of Love: Laments in the Bouwer.

(8) Songs of Evangelism: Song of Amitabha, Song of Enjoying ‘Tao’ and the Song of Repentance.

How to prepare for the integrated essay examination

How to prepare for the integrated essay examination

Although the new semester is about to start, students as well as parents are quite worried due to the soaring education expense, rapidly changing college entrance examination requirements, and unreliable education policy. As the importance of essay education is embossed recently, another thing is added on the list to worry about. That is to say, the examinees this year should map out a super short-term strategy to cope with the essay examination and the reserve examinees should invest much on steady reading and writing for essay improvement in long-term.

The representative of Yu Hwang Wu Korean language classroom introduces the secret method for examinees in need of ‘super short-term strategy’ to improve essay grade and the essay preparation training method for students in need of long-term strategy.

Examinees preparing for 2010 college entry needs super short-term strategy. It should be known first that the necessary essay teaching materials have changed as the tendency of essay changed. It is less likely for hard readings to be given in exams now and the essay experts all agree that school books are enough to study with.

School books are the most effective teaching material to prepare for the changed essay examination. Essay cover material made by university and the simulated essay question published this year are proud of their higher ‘hitting rate’ than any other essay teaching materials. Reading newspaper and meticulously reading the data provided by government or enterprise research institute are also helpful.

It also helps one’s study to know the type of essay. The essay these days is integrated subject type, conforming to styles of various subjects like summary type, compare-analysis type, data interpretation type, argumentation type, opinion presentation type, counterproposal presentation type and evaluation type. The fact integrated subject type essay shows the subject structure of concept and understanding, application and alternative proposal, as well as the fact it is observed to see how examinee understands, re-composes the information given in the reading and unfolds own opinion in consistent point of argument, not the matter of knowledge acquirement, should be noted.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that consistent study rather than rapid increment of study amount is important.

Having more time than examinees, how should reserve examinees prepare for the essay examination then?

First, it is necessary to have consistent interest in books and accumulate professional knowledge. The recent essay examinations have presented various genres of readings like literature, non-literature, visual art, film and statistics. It is good to read suggested must-read books for essay examination and such recommended by experts as well as daily newspaper and columns habitually.

Second is the matter of type; however, it should be written logically. Discordance between the content and type, lack of logic and structure in writings are contrary evidences of insufficient foundation for essay writing. In case like this, it is necessary to pay attention to ‘paragraph’. In case of logically writing, paragraph becomes the basic unit of unfolding logic or thought. To unfold structural logic and naturally flowing logic, one should know to write a paragraph, the basic unit, well. That is to say composing paragraph in one consistent context becomes the basis of writing.

Third, seeing from content perspective, a good writing should be appealing, persuasive, interesting and impressive; it is necessary to learn storytelling. If one can make up stories for any writings, the writing becomes interesting as it unfolds and gains attention. The common feature writings arousing others’ sympathy, such as old stories like Chunhyang-jeon and Shimcheong-jeon as well as recent writing like American President Obama’s autobiography Dreams from My Father, have is the structure of tale. Storytelling is important in writing. Especially, stories with context stimulate intelligence and emotion simultaneously.

Parts explaining to “think broad and deep after constructing the story structure” and “logical thinking being thinking priorities by inquiring what parts are important with vertical thinking after understanding the overall context with lateral thinking” are applicable in writing. Proper usage of inductive method and deductive method is also emphasized.
